Overview:

The University of West Florida, known as UWF or West Florida, is a public institution located in Pensacola, Florida. The university, which was founded in 1963 as a member of Florida’s State University System, is located on the third-largest campus in the State University System, covering 1,600 acres (650 hectares). Argie the Argonaut serves as the school’s mascot, while the chambered nautilus serves as its logo.

The public Board of Education was given permission by the Florida Legislature in 1962 to choose Escambia County as the site of a public university. In July 1964, Harold Crosby was chosen to serve as the first president. UWF joined the State University System of Florida, a network of twelve public institutions, as its sixth institution. On April 16, 1965, the foundation was officially broken, and that same year, the chambered nautilus was chosen as the official UWF insignia. UWF was founded as an institution for graduate, senior, and junior level students. In the autumn of 1967, the first students enrolled, and in the inaugural commencement ceremony in June 1968, 58 students were awarded degrees. The first master’s degree programs were created in 1969, and the undergraduate university programs were recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The establishment of the three schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education marked the university’s transition to a more conventional organizational structure in July 1979. The College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, and the College of Professional Studies were formed from the institutions’ 1999 reorganization. The College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, College of Education and Professional Studies, College of Science, Engineering and Health, and the College of Business replaced the previous three academic colleges in August 2012. The most recent restructuring, which divided the previous College of Science, Engineering, and Health in two, occurred in 2015. The university is currently made up of five colleges: the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health, the College of Business, the College of Education and Professional Studies, the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering, and the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities.
