Overview: 

Austria’s capital city of Vienna is home to the University of Vienna (German: Universität Wien). It is the oldest university in the contemporary German-speaking world and one of the biggest higher education organizations in Europe. Duke Rudolph IV founded it in 1365. The university has ties to 16 Nobel Prize winners and has housed other notable intellectual and historical figures.

It is one of Europe’s biggest and oldest universities. At 19 faculties and centers, there are around 9,600 people—6,800 of them are academic personnel. Austria’s main research and educational institution is now the University of Vienna. The University of Vienna now has 94,000 students enrolled, both domestic and abroad. With more than 175-degree programs, the university provides Austria with the widest selection of academic programs. Additionally, the University of Vienna is a significant source of continuing education. 

In addition, the University of Vienna offers students a number of academic and extracurricular facilities and services, such as a library, sports facilities, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses and distance learning options, as well as administrative services.

Facilities:

 Office: The on-campus office of the Sommerhochschule is at students’ service Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:00pm. The Sommerhochschule staff is available for questions and support.

Located in the office is a basic library where students can select books and readers with the assistance of staff. All readers and copies needed for the courses will be provided by the Sommerhochschule without additional costs. Books, readers and texts for reading assignments will be available in the office free of charge. Copying machines are provided on campus. A study room is available for students to study alone or in groups.

Common Rooms:  The Bundesinstitut für Erwachsenenbildung (BIFEB), the host institution where the summer program is held, offers a variety of common rooms. There is a study room for students to read, write papers, and study. The Bürglstube and the Seehausstube can be used to meet, talk, discuss, have fun, or relax in the evening or on a rainy day. The Bürglbar is open in mornings and evenings all week for students to get a coffee or meet und have fun. On the weekend’s pub quizes, parties, or other events can be organized. The terraces in front of Bürglhaus and Seehaus are places to meet and have a coffee, sit in the sun, read or have a chat.

Computer & Internet: Students have free use of the computer facilities available on campus. All computers provide a wide range of software and have connected access to the internet, electronic mail and printing facilities.

Telephone: Telephone calls can be made at the students’ expense from the room phones. Students can also be reached via telephone in their rooms. It is advisable to buy a prepaid card for the mobile phone offered by various companies. Depending on the company prepaid cards are available at: A1-stores, 3Shops, T-Mobile shops, mobile phone stores, Media Market, Saturn, Hartlauer, post offices, newsagents, supermarkets and other stores. It is recommended to bring one’s own laptop for homework assignments and an USB-stick for data transfer. Wireless internet access is available for free on Campus.

Laundry: Laundry service will be available for € 20 per load. Drying rooms as well as irons will be provided for students.

 

Medical Treatment: Students must provide their own health insurance. Strobl has one local general practitioner who can provide medical care in minor cases, for medical emergencies a nearby hospital is available. Depending on the health insurance appointments with the doctor or treatment at the hospital is either covered or has to be paid for by the students. Upon arrival at home students can retrieve the sum with the invoice from the doctor/hospital from their insurance companies

Austria’s U-Multirank lists 26 universities, including University of Vienna (Universität Wien). The institution of Vienna is a fairly sizable public institution with 80884 students enrolled (2019 figures or latest available). It is located in Vienna. Research is where Vienna University excels. Q: Is it expensive to study in Vienna?

A: Prices vary from one region to another. In Vienna and Salzburg, you should prepare a monthly budget of 900 – 1,300 EUR to cover all your expenses (accommodation, food, social activities and public transportation). In other student cities, like Linz or Graz, living costs range between 900 and 1,000 EUR/month.

A: No. The language of instruction for all bachelor/diploma programmes at the University of Vienna is German, even if individual courses are taught (partly) in another language.
