Overview:
The Roehampton Institute of Higher Education, now known as the University of Roehampton in the UK, was initially founded in 1975. One of London’s original public universities, Roehampton has a history spanning more than 180 years. Four teacher training institutions with the names Digby Stuart College, Froebel College, Southlands College, and Whitelands College were founded in the early 19th century to provide women academic brilliance. Later, in 1975, these four institutions combined to establish the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education.
Roehampton and the University of Surrey collaborated as the Federal University of Surrey between 2000 and 2004. Roehampton became an autonomous university in 2004 and changed its name to the University of Roehampton in 2011. The institution is a post-1992 institution. Roehampton is a part of Universities UK and the European University Association.
Facilities:
Library: In 2017, the university opened a new library, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.[19] The library houses the Jewish Resource Centre Collection,[20] the Centre for Marian Studies,[21] a collection of materials covering all topics relating to the Virgin Mary, the Queen’s Archive, which contains information on authority and governance within the Roman Catholic Church in the UK, and the Richmal Crompton Collection, which includes books and archive material gathered over the course of the life of Richmal Crompton.
Biomedical research facilities: A biomechanics lab for the institution is located at Whitelands College. Advanced optical motion analysis systems, Kistler force plates, Biometrics Electromyography apparatus, goniometers, 3D accelerometers, motion tracking sensors, and physiological evaluation apparatus are all included in the lab’s equipment list.
24-hour computer room: All Whitelands students have access to a 24-hour computer lab that is located on campus. The 24-hour computer banks are located immediately outside the Cluttons Corridor and are accessible to all University students and staff members using their key cards on the ground level of the College. The space is fully equipped with networked printers, vending machines with stationery and practical study tools, and a machine for topping off print credits.
Quiet Study Area and Manresa Hall: In addition to a computer lab open around-the-clock, the college includes two designated quiet study spaces. The first one is on the ground level, right beyond the College vending machines, outside the Gilbert Scott lecture theater. A few dedicated computers are available for use in this area, and there is room for students to study quietly. You can also use the expansive and elaborate Manresa Hall for undisturbed study throughout the academic year.
On rare occasions, Manresa Hall is also known to serve as the location for official College meetings; if you get the chance to attend one of these events, do so.
Student Common Room “The SETT”: A table tennis table, a fiction book exchange, a big-screen TV, board games, and a kitchen area where you can warm your lunch are all available to Whitelands students to use throughout the day and at night. Additionally, it provides noticeboards and details about forthcoming campus activities.

College Kitchen & Student Lockers: Just beyond the SETT bar is the student kitchen area, where students may use the shared refrigerators and microwaves. The daily-use lockers are also nearby, where one may keep any things safely for the day by swiping the student card. All university students have access to and are free to use these lockers.
E-sports: The institution features a 20-PC e-sports arena as well as live streaming and video editing equipment. The first college in the UK to provide e-sports scholarships was the University of Roehampton.
Sports Field and Grounds: The College is located on lovely grounds with a variety of flora and fauna to unwind in while studying. Whitelands is also spoiled since it has a huge playing area and its own football field at the back of the building, which looks out onto Richmond Park. The pitch is frequently used by University teams for practice, but Whitelands students are also welcome to use it and reserve it if they want to have an event there. Catering On-Site: Our Canteen, located at the back of the building, is open five days a week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers a greater range of hot beverages, sandwiches, and cold snacks. The Canteen is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving a variety of hot meals and cuisine with a regularly updated weekly menu that varies every day. In addition to this, there is a hot food station that changes weekly and offers items like omelettes, noodles, and entrees like piri-piri chicken.
Mary Seacole Health Innovation Centre: The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Chair, Sir David Warren, unveiled the Center at a ceremony on September 28. Construction on it, which cost £3.2 million, was made possible by a capital grant from the Office for Students (OfS) to fund the creation of a cutting-edge healthcare hub. The Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals, St. George’s University Hospitals, Kingston Hospital, Sutton Health and Care, Your Healthcare, Central London Community Health, Southwest London and St. George’s Mental Health, Surrey and Borders Partnership, and CCGs are just a few of the outside organizations that have supported the center. The center is named after British-Jamaican nurse Mary Seacole, who is renowned for her assistance of British troops during the Crimean War. The building has a painting by artist Alban Low that features her visage together with pictures of the care she provided for British soldiers and the medals she was awarded for doing so.

Since 2019, Roehampton University has been rated between 801 and 1000 universities worldwide by Times Higher Education (THE). Roehampton has consistently been listed among the top 100 higher education institutions in the UK when we take a deep look at its position among UK universities.
From 2017 through 2021, Roehampton was ranked by The Complete University Guide among the top 100 institutions in the UK. While Roehampton’s ranking in The Guardian has progressively dropped from 90th in 2017 to 116th in 2021. According to The Guardian’s rankings, Roehampton has fallen short on important criteria including admittance requirements, the student-staff ratio, and value-added services.
