Overview: 

The University of Manitoba is a public research university located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is the first university in western Canada and was established in 1877.

The institution of Manitoba is the largest institution in the province of Manitoba and the 17th largest in all of Canada, both in terms of overall student enrollment and campus size. With several campuses spread out over the city, its main campus is situated in the southern Winnipeg neighborhood of Fort Garry. The University of Manitoba operates three more significant campuses in addition to the Fort Garry campus, which serves as its hub: the Bannatyne Campus, the James W. Burns Executive Education Centre, and the William Norrie Centre. The institution also oversees the Winnipeg neighborhood of Saint Boniface’s French-language affiliate, Université de Saint-Boniface.

The university asserts that it continues to uphold a reputation as a leading post-secondary educational institution that places a high priority on research, conducting more research each year than any other university in the area. Its challenging academic and research programs have also consistently ranked among the best in the Canadian Prairies. As a result of research at the University of Manitoba, several well-known contributions have been made, including the development of canola oil in the 1970s. Similarly, U of M graduates include, among many others, Nobel Prize winners, Academy Award winners, Order of Merit recipients, and Olympic medalists. The University of Manitoba has awarded 99 Rhodes Scholarships as of 2019, more than any other university in western Canada. Additionally, the institution has produced a large number of public officials, including as Supreme Court justices, province premiers, and Members of Parliament (MPs).

The University of Minnesota is a part of Universities Canada, the U15 group of research-intensive Canadian universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities, among other international connections. The Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) and U Sports member team, the Manitoba Bisons, represent the group in athletics.

Facilities:

Active Living Centre: The center for health, wellness, and physical exercise at UM is the 100,000 square foot Active Living Centre. The building offers the local community cutting-edge research facilities and a fitness center to support Manitobans in leading healthier lives.

Frank Kennedy Centre: The University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management is located at the Frank Kennedy Centre. Three gymnasiums, racquetball and squash courts, conference spaces, and classrooms are all located there.

Joyce Fromson Pool: Joyce Fromson Pool is a location that is accessible. Along with servicing the general public, the pool and pool activities cater to the needs of our campus’s student, staff, teacher, and alumni groups.

Investors Group Athletic Centre: The University of Manitoba Bisons basketball and volleyball teams call this 70,000 square foot space home, and it also serves as the major location for convocation. Large-scale events like concerts, trade exhibitions, and symposiums can also be held there.

James Daly Fieldhouse: James Daly Fieldhouse offers 1,350 seats (permanent and temporary), a 200-meter high performance banked track, and other amenities. Baseball, baseball, volleyball, handball, tennis, and soccer are all great sports to play in the track’s infield. The fieldhouse serves as the base of operations for the Bisons Track & Field team, hosts national championship competitions, and serves as a key center for Mini U Programs. This building offers accessibility.

Wayne Fleming Arena: There is one ice surface at the facility, and there are 1,400 seats total. Hockey, sponge hockey, ringette, and broomball all thrive there. The arena serves as a primary program location for Mini U Programs and is home to the Winnipeg ICE of the WHL and the Bisons hockey team.

University Stadium: An outdoor track and field facility with several uses, University Stadium has a sizable infield made of natural grass. Athletes and spectators are shielded from the wind by the venue’s bowl shape.

Outdoor fields: The two outdoor fields at the university have FieldTurf artificial turf surfaces. They are durable, strong, safe, and absorbent of shock. They are up to the FIFA Recommended 2 Star artificial turf field standards in terms of quality.

Soccer and football players are accommodated on the East field. The Bisons soccer team plays all of its home games on the West field. West of the indoor soccer facility for the Winnipeg Soccer Federation South are the fields.

Tennis courts: From spring through fall, you may play tennis on our outdoor courts. Four full-size hard courts with complete surround fence are available.
