Overview: 

The University of Newcastle is a public institution located in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It was founded in 1965, and its main campus is in the Callaghan neighborhood of Newcastle. In addition to Sydney, the institution has campuses in Central Coast, Singapore, Newcastle City in the Hunter, and elsewhere. The Australian Medical Council eventually regulated the use of the problem-based learning approach throughout Australia, although it was first introduced by the University of Newcastle Medical School for its undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine program. In the early 1990s, it was a pioneer in the implementation of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT). Since then, several medical schools in Australia have recognized UMAT as an extra criterion for admission. The University of Newcastle is a part of Universities Australia, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the Australian Technology Network.
