Overview: 

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is a public university located in the English city of Leicester. It was created in 1992 as a degree granting authority in compliance with the Further and Higher Education Act. Simon de Montfort, an Earl of Leicester in the 13th century, provided the inspiration for the name De Montfort University.

De Montfort University has over 27,000 full-time and part-time students, 3,240 employees, and a yearly revenue of about £168 million.  The university is divided into four faculties: computing, engineering and media (CEM), business and law (BAL), health and life sciences (H&LS), and art, design, and humanities (ADH). It is a Sustainable Development Hub that prioritizes peace, justice, and robust institutions. The United Nations established this program in 2018. The 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework gave the university a Gold grade from the Department of Education. The Association of Commonwealth Universities counts it among its members.

Facilities:

The MTI Research Lab: The flagship facility of the MTI Research Centre is the MTI Research Lab (MTIRL). With the help of a £550,000 HEFCE SRIF2 (Science Research Infrastructure) grant, the 1670 square foot facility in the Clephan Building was built in 2004 and has since undergone several upgrades to meet the changing demands of our researchers.

Performing Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE): A certified UK Center for Excellence, the PACE facility houses world-class performance spaces for dance, music, and theater. This contains the 16m x 16m PACE Studio 1 performance space, which is acoustically balanced and has a surround and diffusion audio system built in.

Shared Undergrad/Postgrad MTI Facilities: The Courtyard Studio, which includes professional-grade recording studios, stereo and surround composition studios, workstations, and more, supports both undergraduate and graduate research and instruction.

Creative Technology Studios: Industry-standard audio and radio production suites are available at the Creative Technology Studios (CTS) in the Queens Building. These suites include two fully-equipped recording studios with top-of-the-line analogue and digital recording systems and surround sound monitoring, Foley and voice-over studios, and broadcast-standard radio production studios with expert playout and management systems.

Phoenix Square Film and Digital Media Centre: Phoenix Square Film and Digital Media Centre in Leicester counts DMU as one of its partners. Audiovisual installations and activities related to the MTIRC have taken place at the DMU Cube installation venue. In the Screen Lounge and Cafe, we have also presented live electronic music concerts. One of Pheonix’s full-scale digital projection theatres hosts our annual Visible Bits Audible Bytes audivisual screening and performance. Additionally, Phoenix Square hosted the 2012 M4_u Max/MSP Convention.

Sound Art Lab: The Sound Art Lab is a versatile area for creating sound that may be set up for installation art, practice with diffusion, audio-visual presentations, and independent study. A multi-channel sound system, two permanent workstations, and connection for mobile working are all present. This lab, which is roomy, naturally illuminated, and furnished with comfortable chairs, serves as the center of the postgraduate community.

Diffusion Lab: Advanced sound diffusion design and experimentation take place in the floating construction room known as the Diffusion Studio.

Audiovisual Lab: The audiovisual lab is located in a soundproof chamber with floating structure. Through a combination of video editing and 5.1 surround mixing and monitoring features, it facilitates audio-visual work and composition.

 

Ranking:

De Montfort has been ranked among the top 1,000 universities in the world on a worldwide scale.  De Montfort has been included among the top 100 universities in the UK by international rating organizations since 2017. De Montfort is ranked 801–1000 internationally in the QS World University Ranking 2023, where it has been since 2020. When considering the overall situation, De Montfort has maintained its level of research and teaching excellence and has stayed in the same category as top ranked institutions.

When we look at the list of top UK universities, we see that De Montfort is ranked 1219 in the category of Best Global Universities by renowned UK rating publishers US News.  De Montfort was placed 601–800 in the 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education publication that releases the global university rankings.
