Trine University
Overview:
Trine University is a private university with campuses in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Angola, Indiana. It also has educational hubs in Detroit and Phoenix. The Higher Learning Commission has accredited it since its foundation in 1884.
Due to its location in Indiana and close proximity to Michigan and Ohio, Trine was first established in 1884 as Tri-State Normal College and has continued to use the term “tri-state” for more than 120 years. The institution was renamed Tri-State College in 1906, and then Tri-State University in 1975. With flexible evening and weekend programs, the school first serviced the needs of the local community of teachers and engineers before developing into a multidisciplinary institution with an increase in daytime classes, an athletics department, and more extensive student life activities. Tri-State was successful in receiving its inaugural regional accreditation on June 1, 1963. Since then, it has maintained its accreditation as an institution, most notably extending its Level V accreditation until the following review visit (2026). Additionally, on February 26, 2019, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) confirmed its accreditation of the Ketner School of Business.
In 2002, Tri-State became a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and received provisional membership in the NCAA Division III at the same time that the $650,000 Ketner Sports Complex was opened. The institution graduated its first batch of Master of Science in Engineering Technology students in 2005, after more than a century of providing engineering courses. The institution was renamed Trine University in 2008 in recognition of alumni Ralph Trine and his wife Sheri. In order to distinguish the institution as a nationally competitive private university that is neither state-funded nor affiliated with any other enterprises or organizations utilizing the word “tri-state,” the phrase “tri-state” was dropped. The university established a number of educational facilities throughout northern and central Indiana during the 1990s. Eventually, the educational center offerings were shifted online.
