University of Bolton

Overview:

The University of Bolton, sometimes known as Bolton Institute or just Bolton, is a public university located in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. It includes 700 academic and professional staff members and over 6,000 students. Its student body is made up of around 70% residents of the North West and Bolton. The university is a part of Universities UK, Million+, and the North West Universities Association.

The Bolton Mechanics’ Institute was established in 1824[5], which is when the University of Bolton first appeared. The Committee of the Mechanics’ Institute determined in 1887 that the rapidly increasing engineering advancements occurring at the turn of the nineteenth century required technical training for the town’s apprentices. Due to this, a new Technical School was established, and its enrollment increased to almost 1,500 students.

Bolton Technical School changed its name to a college in 1926. A new structure giving a wide range of technical education options, with engineering being the most popular, was unveiled fifteen years later. Bolton Institute of Technology and Bolton Technical College were split into two distinct organizations in 1964. A J Jenkinson served as the inaugural Principal of Bolton Institute of Technology before serving as the Principal of the Technical College and Bolton College of Education (Technical).

The Bolton Institute of Technology and Bolton College of Education combined to become the Bolton Institute of Higher Education in 1982. John McKenzie served as BIHE’s first head of school before being succeeded by Bob Oxtoby. The push for university status was started by Oxtoby. With the acquisition of the old Eagle Factory in 1991, an expansion project of £8.3 million got underway. In 1992, Bolton Institute received authorization to grant taught degrees, and in 1996, it also received authorization to grant research degrees. Mollie Temple, who took over as the third principal in 1998, successfully guided the school to university status in 2004. It was the first institution in the North West to become a Living Wage employer in November 2014.

Private landowners supply other forms of housing. One similar structure, the “Cube” on Bradshaw gate, suffered significant fire damage in November 2019. According to eyewitnesses, the building’s cladding aided in the fire’s spread. Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester’s metropolitan area, stated, “It does have a form of cladding that does create worry. Many people who now reside in buildings with this cladding will be quite alarmed.

University Collegiate School: In September 2015, University Collegiate School UTC Bolton, a university technical college supported by the University of Bolton, opened its doors on the campus of the institution. The UTC was formally inaugurated by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex in November 2015 and given the name “Stoller Building” in honor of benefactor Sir Norman Stoller. The school changed its name to University Collegiate School in September 2020. The university currently sponsors a comprehensive secondary school there.

Growth and future plans: A new £10 million science and engineering building that will house the university’s Center for Advanced Performance Engineering has also been revealed. After the UTC building was completed in September 2015, work was supposed to start. Additionally, the present site was scheduled to undergo refurbishment and expansion until 2017. In 2015, the university and Bolton Council unveiled plans for a new £40 million student village that would house up to 850 students just across from the renowned Le Mans Crescent in the center of Bolton’s town center.

International presence: The University has a campus in the United Arab Emirates’ Ras al-Khaimah and has developed relationships with several foreign academic institutions in China, Germany, Greece, Malawi, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Since 2009, the University of Bolton and Western International College Ras Al Khaimah have collaborated to offer undergraduate and graduate-level programs. In collaboration with the KES Group of Institutions, the University of Bolton opened its academic center in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in December 2011. A memorandum of agreement between the University and the University of the Republic of San Marino fosters collaboration between the two academic institutions.
