Overview: 

Birmingham City University, a public institution, was founded in 1971 as the City of Birmingham Polytechnic via the amalgamation of five separate institutions. Birmingham College of Art, Birmingham School of Music, Birmingham College of Commerce, South Birmingham Technical College, and North Birmingham Technical College were the five colleges in question. Birmingham City University attained university status in 1992. The University of Central England in Birmingham received a new name in 1992. The university finally adopted Birmingham City University as its new name in 2007 and unveiled a new logo that was a modified version of the tiger crest. It is the second-largest of the five institutions in the city. 

With over 24,000 foreign students enrolled in one of their many programs from over 100 different countries, the institution provides a varied, welcoming, and professional learning environment. Financial advice: On finances, employment, and maximizing financial resources, guidance and help are provided. Throughout National Student Money Week, several initiatives are carried out to assess students’ financial stability. The institution has financial experts on staff.

Study and social spaces: All across the campuses, there are several breakout and social learning rooms with catering options.

Sports facilities: 

The $71 million facility in Edgbaston, Birmingham, and the renowned Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr, Birmingham, are used to teach the sports courses. A state-of-the-art sport and exercise lab, sports therapy room, biomechanics lab, and physiology lab are among the cutting-edge amenities for sports students.

The University is investing an additional £5 million to build space in the East and West stands as a home for the students. The Stadium served as the venue for the Commonwealth Games in the summer of 2022.

City South Sports Centre: The new building at City South campus is home to our sports and physiotherapy courses. It features state-of-the-art sports and fitness analysis equipment as well as a fully equipped sports hall, perfect for indoor sports.

Doug Ellis Sports Centre: The Doug Ellis Sports Centre is a fantastic health and fitness facility which is available to all. Work out in the fitness suite, join one of our classes or team up with your friends for an activity in the sports hall.

 

The fully air-conditioned gym has over 80 pieces of fitness equipment to choose from including cardiovascular (great for your heart and lungs), resistance equipment (great for toning the body) and a free weights area. So, whether your goal is to lose weight, look good or feel great, our team of qualified fitness instructors are on hand to help you get the most from your workout sessions.

The eight-court sports hall has a semi-sprung wood floor and is marked out for:

  • Five-a-side football
  • Cricket
  • Volleyball.

Other features include strength areas, workout studios and all-weather pitches.

Membership: There are Health and Fitness memberships exclusively available to Birmingham City University students and staff.  All memberships include unlimited use of the Fitness Suite and are available with or without workout classes, allowing to pick the right membership.

The Pavillion: The Pavilion is our home to rugby and football. Its facilities include:

  • Flood-lit full-sized all-weather pitch
  • Show pitch with advertising space
  • Seven full-sized adult football pitches
  • Two intermediate football pitches
  • Two junior football pitches
  • One rugby pitch
  • 22 changing rooms with further allocation for referees.

Social events and post-match relaxation are easily accommodated in the large, first floor function area; complete with extensive bar, comfortable seating and plasma screens showing all the latest sports action.

 

Ranking:

Birmingham City University retained the same place in 2022 and 2023. In both of these years, it placed between #1001 and #1200. Given that the university’s rating ranged from 801 to 1000 in 2021, it is clear that nothing has changed since then. Similar to how it did in 2022, the university received a ranking between 501 and 600 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. 13 factors altogether were used to rate the institutions. Birmingham City University was ranked 94th in the top 100 institutions in the United Kingdom for higher education in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023. Oxford University won first place in the competition. The University of St. Andrews and the University of Cambridge came in second and third, respectively, after this. In the University Rankings 2023 published by The Guardian, the university dropped quite a few positions this year. This is evident from the fact that the university, which was ranked 67th in 2022, is now listed at position 100. BCU was ranked 89th in the Complete University Guide – University Ranking 2023 with a 53% overall rating. Overall, compared to prior years, the university’s rating performed less well.

In the UK, Birmingham City University ranks seventh for employability. Within six months of graduation, more than 97% of its alumni have jobs or are enrolled in more education. The institution received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of the innovative history of the School of Jewellery.
