University of Michigan

Overview:

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, the United States, the University of Michigan (U-M, UMich, or just Michigan) is a public research institution. The biggest and oldest university in Michigan was founded in 1817, twenty years before the region was admitted as a state. Michigan has been a coeducational university since 1871.

According to a Michigan Territory law, the University of Michigan was founded as Catholepistemiad, or Catholepistemiad Michigania, on August 26, 1817. The Act of 1817 gave origin to the university’s corporate existence, which has persisted through all amendments to its organic legislation since then. The neologism “Catholepistemiad” approximately translates to “School of Universal Knowledge.”

Facilities:

Mammalian Cell Culture Lab: Mammalian cells are being cultured in this facility. Both academic staff and students in chemical engineering utilize it. The laboratory is equipped with the fundamental tools required for cell culture, such as incubators, microscopes, centrifuges, and laminar flow hoods.

Electron Microbeam Analysis Laboratory: A university-wide resource for the microstructural and microchemical characterisation of materials is the U-M Electron Microbeam Analysis Laboratory (EMAL). EMAL now has two locations: the second floor of the C.C. Little Building on Central Campus and the west basement of the Space Research Building on North Campus.

Michigan Center for Materials Characterization (MC)2: More than 450 users from different colleges and departments on the University of Michigan campus, more than 100 internal research groups, and 20 non-academic businesses are supported by (MC)2’s varied multi-disciplinary user base. The goal of (MC)2 is to enable and promote cutting-edge learning, research, and company growth by providing affordable, effective, safe, and socially responsible access to sophisticated characterisation equipment and knowledge.

J.D. Hanawalt X-Ray MicroAnalysis Laboratory: The Hanawalt XMAL’s objective is to offer the University of Michigan’s materials community cutting-edge nanostructural characterization capabilities.

  • Smartlab X-Ray Diffractometer by Rigaku
  • High Resolution X-Ray Diffractometer Bede D1
  • Gadds (General Area Detector Diffraction System) using the Bruker D8 Discover

Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (LNF): A comprehensive variety of manufacturing and characterization capabilities are available through the LNF. Research on silicon devices and integrated circuits, MEMS and microsystems, micro- and nanofluidic systems, III-V compound devices, organic materials and devices, and advanced coatings, patterning, and nanofabrication technologies is supported by simple access to equipment, procedures, and knowledgeable people.

It offers expertise to aid and counsel researchers with their projects and is accessible to research organizations from universities, government, and business.

Cleanroom and lab space: The LNF have 2,500 square feet of quasi-class 10,000 laboratory space with a BioSafety Level 2 area and 11,000 square feet of Class 10/100/1000 cleanroom.

High Temperature Corrosion Laboratory (HTCL): In order to undertake experimental research on corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and hydrogen embrittlement in high temperature aqueous and gas settings, in particular simulated light water reactor conditions, the HTCL was established. The corrosion laboratory features special equipment for conducting studies on stress corrosion cracking, high- and low-temperature corrosion, electrochemical testing, and mechanical tests. The HTCL is made up of six updated autoclave systems, five of which are placed in constant extension rate (CERT) machines and one of which is mounted in a constant load machine. These systems are made of titanium, Inconel, or stainless steel.

A variety of settings, including supercritical water, simulated BWR and PWR water, high temperature steam, and gas environments, are suitable for conducting experiments. With independent water and computer monitoring systems, each autoclave is isolated from the other systems. Two more potentiostats and two full-featured corrosion measuring equipment are also present in the lab.

Biointerfaces Institute Research Facilities: To house facilities for wet chemistry, biologic engineering, cell and tissue culture, drug delivery research, microfluidics, and nanotechnology, BI makes advantage of its enormous footprint. In order to further its research objectives, BI provides tools for common usage. In order to provide BI researchers with access to specialized tools and training, as well as the wider U-M and external partner community, four key research centers were formed. The facilities house cutting-edge machinery that is compatible with BI’s primary research areas.

U-M Battery Lab: In the heart of the U.S. car industry, the Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility promotes industry and academic researcher collaboration on the development of less expensive and more durable energy-storage systems.

Advanced Research Computing (ARC): The U-M research community is served by ARC’s high-performance computer resources and assistance. The campus-wide data science research, infrastructure, and services will receive a $100 million investment under the Data Science Initiative.
