Rowan University

Overview:

Rowan University has a public research facility in Glassboro, New Jersey, as well as a campus with academic and medical facilities in Camden. Founded in 1923 as Glassboro Normal School on a 25-acre (10 ha) site donated by 107 residents, the school was formerly known as Glassboro State College from 1958 until 1992 and Rowan College of New Jersey from 1992 to 1997.

The university includes 14 colleges and schools with a total enrollment (undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies) of just over 19,600 students. Rowan offers 85 bachelor’s, 46 master’s degrees, six doctoral degrees, and two professional degrees. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity”.

In New Jersey, there was a dearth of instructors with the necessary training in the early 20th century. In order to buck the trend, it was decided to construct a two-year Normal school in the southern region of the state. Among the potential communities, Glassboro was chosen in large part because of its convenient access to passenger train and its willingness to provide the state 25 acres (0.039 square miles) of property so that the Normal school could be built there. The town’s citizens boosted the property’s purchase price ($7,000 at the time) in 1917 and used it to buy a tract that belonged to the Whitney family, which ran the area’s glassworks throughout the 19th century.

A class of 236 students, 226 women and 10 men, arrived at the railway station in front of Bunce Hall in 1923 to begin classes at the Glassboro Normal School. In 1934, the school changed to a four-year curriculum to keep up with the development of teacher education. In 1937, the school changed its name to The New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro, and shortly after that, it became coed.
