Central Michigan University

Overview:

Central Michigan University (CMU) is a public research university located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. As a private normal school, it was founded in 1892 under the name Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. In 1895, the school was renamed Central State Normal School after the Michigan State Board of Education assumed control of its administration. Under the leadership of Judson W. Foust, the university’s sixth president, the school came into its own as a university and adopted its present name in 1959.

As the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, CMU first welcomed students in 1892. In June 1892, Professor Charles F. R. Bellows, a University of Michigan alumnus, was appointed the normal school’s first headmaster.

31 students attended lessons in the Carpenter Building in the heart of Mount Pleasant for the first year. Bellows participated in the building of the first Main Building, which debuted in September 1893, and conducted a study of the future location of the school. Land was purchased, and a $10,000 school structure was built within the first two years. In 1900, the independent Conservatory for Music that Bellows established during his administration and paid for out of his own pocket was merged into the Normal. He continued to lecture to teacher groups around the State and teach as a professor. Bellows oversaw the school’s advertising campaign in an effort to draw in additional pupils.

The institution was taken over by the Michigan State Board of Education in 1895, who gave it a new name: Central Michigan Normal institution. The next year, Bellows left Central. In 1902, he came back to Ypsilanti to work as a teacher at the Michigan State Normal School (which is now Eastern Michigan University). The campus included five buildings and 25 acres by 1918. On June 1, 1959, Central was renamed Central Michigan University with 4,500 students enrolled and 40 buildings still intact on the 235-acre campus. The designation reflected both the school’s physical enlargement and the post-war increase in the complexity of its academic offerings. Over the following ten years, enrollment surged.
