Arkansas State University

Overview:

In Jonesboro, Arkansas, there is a public research institution known as Arkansas State University (A-State or ASU). The second-largest institution in the state and the flagship school of the Arkansas State institution System. The institution was established in 1909 and is situated atop Crowley’s Ridge, which spans 1,376 acres (557 hectares).

The Arkansas Legislature established A-State as the First District Agricultural School in Jonesboro in 1909 as a local agricultural training institution. The resolution requesting the construction of four state agricultural institutions, including the future ASU, was first proposed in 1909 by Robert W. Glover, a Missionary Baptist minister who served in both chambers of the Arkansas Legislature from Sheridan (1905–1912).

ASU started providing two-year college programs in 1918. First District Agricultural and Mechanical College was established in 1925. In 1930, a four-year degree program was launched. In 1933, A&M College changed its name to Arkansas State College. The college was given university status by the Arkansas Legislature in 1967, and its name was changed to Arkansas
